One District One Product

One District One Product Bhandara District
The Government of India’s Department for Promotion of Industry, and Internal Trade (DPIIT) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, introduced the ‘One District One Product’ (ODOP) initiative to promote local entrepreneurship and empower rural areas by harnessing their traditional skills and industries. The program aims to create sustainable livelihood opportunities and foster economic growth at the district level.

The ODOP Initiative is the manifestation of the vision of the Honorable Prime Minister of India, to foster balanced regional development across all districts of the country. The idea is to select, brand, and promote one product from each district of the country for enabling holistic socioeconomic growth across all regions. The mandate of the ODOP initiative includes identifying, understanding, and solving problems associated with each of the chosen products at all points in their respective supply chains, improving the market accessibility of the chosen products, and dedicated handholding of the producers to harness the full potential of the chosen products. Maharashtra has been actively pursuing the ODOP promotion initiatives. A total of 72 ODOPS, comprising both industrial and agricultural sectors, have been identified from all 36 districts of Maharashtra. Under this initiative, the ODOP products identified for Bhandara district are Rice and Mineral Ores.

Bhandara district, located on the banks of the Wainganga River, is known as the ‘Rice Bowl of Maharashtra’ because of its large production of rice. Rice cultivars with a strong aroma such as Chinnor, Dubhraj, and Kalikammod, are in high demand across the country. To reap the benefit of scale in terms of availing common services and so to enable the holistic socioeconomic growth across the district, the district has prepared a dedicated action plan in order to harness the full potential of the rice cultivation.
